Wine Growing

The Wachau's mild climate and fertile soils make it a versatile wine-growing region. Specific reference needs to be made to the classifications of the white wines which predominate in the wine terraces around Mautern.  A light-bodied Steinfeder is a good choice on hot summer days, a glass of Federspiel is a fine accompaniment to most meals and a full-bodied Smaragd is the perfect way to round off a lovely day out in the Wachau.  Work throughout the year in the vineyards, from the planting of new vines to the harvest in the autumn, followed by the period of maturation in the cellars, all serve to shape the character of the locals to a considerable extent.
