Hiking and Leisure Activities

Leisure activities and the outdoors go hand in hand in Mautern!  Mautern is situated on the Danube cycle path which stretches from Passau to Vienna.  One of the most beautiful stretches on this route takes cyclists through the Wachau region and directly to Mautern.  There are plenty of opportunities for hikers and walkers alike to stop and behold the amazing views and picturesque sites in the Wachau, whether walking part of the Jakobsweg or following the 'Countryside and Rock' nature trail with its many exhibits or simply going on one of the many walks around Mautern.  For those who prefer to take it easy, you can take in the World Cultural Heritage landscape from on board a relaxing river cruise.

Wachau Centre for Running and Nordic Walking

Routes within the Wachau Centre for Running and Nordic Walking are classified from easy to difficult and range from 5.2km to 19.2km.  Routes are suitable for families, athletes and hikers alike.  A route for wheelchair users has also been developed.  All routes begin and end at the Römerhalle in Mautern.  There are 6 routes in total and they take users through the neighbouring towns of Furth bei Göttweig and Bergern im Dunkelsteinerwald.  It is also possible to join the routes at Furth train station or at the church in Unterbergern.
